Cultural Property Material of Gyeonggi Province No. 99 (2001.1.22)
429-6 Uijeongbu-dong

This is the Catholic Church which was built by Father Yi Gyaegwang in 1953 with the assistant of the 1 Corps, U.S. Army located at Uijeongbu. This was completed by masons who worked at that area on 29 August 1953 with a collection of U.S Army Catholic believers and stones quarried from.

A Catholic Church built before and after 50s generally maintains the uniqueness of conventional Catholic Church style in detail pattern and architecture pattern of the front and the perpendicular bell tower. This type is dubbed transformed western style church specially; churches do get asterism by using stone which make a building more stand out in the course of wars. This Catholic Church shows the changes of construction of Catholic Church at time before and behind of the Korean War. It has been kept well in the original form.

경기도 문화재자료 제99호(2001.1.22) 의정부동 429-6번지 이 성당은 1953년 이계광(요한) 신부가 당시 의정부에 주둔하고 있던 미1군단의 군종 신부인 로제스키 신부의 협조를 받아 건립한 건물이다. 당시 미1군단 카톨릭 신자의 헌금으로 회천면 덕정리 돌산에서 채석한 돌로 의정부지역에서 활동하던 석공들에 의하여 1953년 8월 29일 완공하였다. 일반적으로 50년대를 전후한 시기의 성당건축은 열주가 사라지고, 수직종탑과 정면의 양식적 형태 세부적인 모양은 고전적인 성당의 형식을 유지하게 된다. 이러한 유형을 양식 변형 양옥성당이라고 하며, 특히 전쟁을 거치면서 견고함이 새삼 강조되어 석재를 사용하여 성채와 같이 표현하기도 하였다. 의정부2동 성당은 6.25전쟁을 전후한 시기의 성당건축 변화와 시대적 상황을 잘 나타내고 있으며, 평면 및 구조, 의장등에서 건축사적 가치가 높고 원형이 잘 보존되어 있다.
