Geocache Description:

A nice find at False Bay and the University of Washington Friday Harbor Labs Biologic Preserve.

When we first started geocaching there was a cache placed here by fhsailcoach which has since gone missing and been deactivated. We like the area and thought geocaching visitors and island locals would like a chance to explore here.

Depending on the tides when you visit, False Bay will either be filled with water, looking like a real bay, or a mud flat. This area is owned by the University of Washington and is open to the public. The undeveloped preserve area is about a half mile wide with some sandy and rocky stretches on the shore. It's a good place to look for shorebirds.

Visitors to the False Bay Biological Preserve are asked to respect and preserve the property. Don't take any creatures, including fish and shellfish, or plants. False Bay is frequently visited by UW Friday Harbor Labs biology classes and is the site of numerous research projects. False Bay is one of 5 biologic preserves owned and maintained by the UW Friday Harbor Labs in the San Juan Islands.

This area was purchased by the UW in 1974 at auction following a bankrupt development scheme for several hundred homes on a grid of sand piers within the bay. Thank goodness that didn't happen! The preserve includes most of the approximately 300 acres of tidelands in False Bay and a 23 acre upland property that borders the north end of False Bay and False Bay Drive.

Access is from a pullout off False Bay Road.
