Cocumscussoc State Park is a little slice of wilderness in North
Kingstown. The park includes marshland, tall ridges, and only a
handful of trails, most of which are not going where you are. I
decided to hike out to the farthest reaches of the park just to
explore, and I wanted to share the experience. The cache will be a
challenge to get to, due to the density of the forest, even in the
winter. In the summer, it will be much more difficult.
Be sure
to wear your BLAZE ORANGE during hunting season!
Cache is 0.7 miles (as the crow flies) from the nearest parking
area. Possible parking include the Richard Smith's grove, the end
of Juniper Drive, and on Stony Lane near the Pet Refuge. Be sure to
make your approach from the north or east to avoid private
property, which begins just a few hundred yards to the southwest of
the cache.
Although there are many possible approaches to this cache; I
recommend the following approach: park at the end of Juniper Drive.
At the parking area, carefully search for a trail that snakes off
directly left (not the trail that runs straight ahead!) After a
short walk, take a right. This trail will take you across a stream
and into the highlands at the back of the park. From there, it's a
relatively easy walk through light woods to the cache site. I've
marked the trails that I've discovered so far
in OpenStreetMap, maybe you can discover others?
Be sure not to leave the bounds of the park; some of the trails
do snake off into private property, particularly the well-trodden
path at the western edge of the property.
Good Luck!
