Geocache Description:

You could park anywhere within the park. There are multiple trails including The Rachel Carson Trail which spans 35 miles from the Harrison Hills Park south and then west towards North Park. A map can be found at the parking lots. Enjoy this great park and the other caches too.

Harrison Hills Park occupies the extreme northeast portion of Allegheny County, bordering the Allegheny River and offering a magnificent overlook in which the viewer can see three other counties--Westmoreland, Butler and Armstrong.

Because the trail passes close by the birthplace in Springdale of Rachel Carson, one of the early ecologists, the trail was dedicated in her name. The Rachel Carson Trail was completed in February 1975. Some of her notable books include Silent Spring, where she brings attention to the harmful side affects of DDT, and Sense of Wonder, encouraging parents to take their children outside and experience nature.

This cache is part of the Main Line Canal GeoTrail, a chance to experience the Pittsburgh-Harrisburg Main Line Canal Greenway through geocaching. The Greenway is a linked network of land and water trails, tracing the path of the historic Main Line Canal. These caches may be found in an outdoor recreation destination, a key heritage location or an environmental educational site- all ways the Greenway is making new connections between old neighbors. You must find at least 4 geocaches in each of the Main Line Canal Greenway Clusters and record the codes found at each cache in the Logbook. Once you have completed the MLCG Logbook you can receive a MLCG trackable geocoin. Remember CITO can be practiced all year long and Leave No Trace.
