Geocache Description:

This cache can accessed from either the Cove Dale or Williamsburg trailheads but the road to the Cove Dale access is a little rough and may not have much winter maintenance. Hike is about 1.5 miles out and back from Cove Dale and about 5 miles out and back from Williamsburg.

Much of this trail was the original towpath for the Pennsylvania Canal that operated in the early 1800’s. Then the Pennsylvania Railroad took over both the business and the land. By 1930, the Pennsylvania RR handled more traffic in one day that is predecessor, the Allegheny-Portage RR, had done in a year. As the RR grew, so did Central PA. Each of the trailheads is located at or near the former RR stations. The Canal that ran 127 miles between Hollidaysburg and Duncan’s Island (near Harrisburg) in the Susquehanna required 86 locks. There are many remnants of the canal locks and channels, lock tender’s homes and mills.

This cache is part of the Main Line Canal GeoTrail, a chance to experience the Pittsburgh-Harrisburg Main Line Canal Greenway through geocaching. The Greenway is a linked network of land and water trails, tracing the path of the historic Main Line Canal. These caches may be found in an outdoor recreation destination, a key heritage location or an environmental educational site- all ways the Greenway is making new connections between old neighbors. You must find at least 4 geocaches in each of the Main Line Canal Greenway Clusters and record the codes found at each cache in the Logbook. Once you have completed the MLCG Logbook you can receive a MLCG trackable geocoin. Remember CITO can be practiced all year long and Leave No Trace.
