Geocache Description:

A fairly easy 2 part multi, with a .50 cal golden ammo can as the final. The first part is in an open field, and the final can be found by either following a deer trail with minor bushwacking, or following a wide, mowed, well maintained trail.

First, I'll start with the congratulations - Team GeoGriffin has reached 1,000 finds!!!!

I've known "Dad" from "the Team" for a while now, and he has taught me quite a lot about geocaching. He has done a lot of things for the local geocaching community, from technical answers and thoughtful postings at GeoRoc.org, to being an unofficial liason with Monroe County Parks and organizing Cache-In-Trash-Out (CITO) events, as well as some interesting hides, including a puzzle cache that had the geocaching community scratching their collective heads for months and months. He has even performed some amazing caching feats, such as finding 9 different cache types in one day, finding caches in 5 states in one day (and they weren't even tiny New England states!), and completing 2 regions of the Seaway Trail Geotrail in one day.

Well, the one thing "Dad" has taught me that I use the most is "Trolling for Geocaches". He and I both have the Garmin Nuvi we use for driving (he a 260, me a 360), and different hand held units for trails. Well, if you visit his homepage, he describes in great detail how to use GSAK and the Garmin POI Loader to load essentially unlimited numbers of geocaches into your GPSr units. And one nice feature with the Nuvi is that you can then bring up a list of nearby caches, and it will give you the distance and bearing to them as you are driving. I was HOOKED on this the first time I tried it.

The naming convention he uses gives quick, simple, visual clues as to the cache itself as you are driving along, including a single character alphanumeric "code" for difficulty and terrain (1=1, 1.5=A, 2=2, 2.5=B, etc.). This is a great way to easily determine if an upcoming cache is a quick stop or a more difficult one. For the typical quick, easy, ammo can hide, you would see on your screen "T R A A Team GeoGriffin's Golden" where the letters tell you Traditional (vs. puzzle or multi), Regular size, difficulty=1.5=A, terrain=1.5=A, and then the cache name. I am telling you, the first time you try it you will love it. Awesome. The screen shot to the left shows the closest cache to be Team GeoGriffin's "QR Code Multi", which is an unknown type with difficulty of 4 and terrain of 2, the Wherigo at the Rochester Museum and Science Center, another puzzle cache called "Hidden Pictures", the "Betwixt and Between" traditional, regular sized, etc.

Well, I noticed pretty quickly one thing that was a little confusing at first. If the name started with "A", such as "A Quick Hide", then you would get a display that looked like "T R A A A Quick Hide". Huh? An extra "A", what's that? Once I figured out the issue, it was pretty funny to see it, and I thought that I would love to place a cache that would create an even more interesting display on a Nuvi using the "Team GeoGriffin Method" of trolling for geocaches.

Now this cache is placed a long way from home for Team GeoGriffin, so I decided to put out a few other caches a couple miles away to entice them to make the drive. At first this was going to be a traditional, but there is such a nice view I wanted to start folks at the view first, and then walk them to the final. The first part is waterproof coordinates attached to a man-made object. The trail can be muddy and slippery at times, hence the 2 rating, but most of the time it is flat and dry. I did see some indications of poison ivy in the area, although not at any of the parts of the cache. The final is a golden ammo with a couple of nice, big lammies for FTF (and a smaller one for STF), and a special unactivated geocoin. FTF will be, by prior notification, Team GeoGriffin. I had some problems with satellite reception the day I placed this, so the coordinates may be off by a little ... the hints below should help.

And there you have it ... the longest description for a cache title EVER. Now wake up, wipe the drool off your chin, and go find the cache (trolling is optional).

Please place a note of congratulations to Team GeoGriffin in your logs!
