Geocache Description:

The Long Paddock-Wilcannia

Overview

The Long Paddock is the colloquial term for the stock routes that cross Australia - open strecthes of unfenced land that anyone can use to move stock or feed in times of drought. The Long Paddock – Cobb Highway touring route follows the length of the Cobb Highway (610 km) from Echuca Moama on the Victorian border through to Wilcannia in the north.

When you spend a few minutes taking in the historic buildings around Wilcannia you can quickly imagine the rich and vibrant history of this town. Once known as the "Queen City of the West", Wilcannia was one of the busiest inland port and third largest port in Australia during last century. During the 1880s boom years, sandstone was quarried to create the beautiful buildings that today remain as a reminder of that prosperous era. A short drive or walk around town will reveal the great sandstone buildings, centre lift bridge and old wharf. Wilcannia has a large aboriginal community and is the traditional home of the Barkindji people ("barka", meaning river).
