BAC, Chesapeake District, Cache to Eagle #5 Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

Death Wish Dave: The first stage of this cache has moved permanently and the new location has some proximity issues so I'm gonna archive this to make room for a new cache. Of course, the geocaching community will likely see this ammo can container again, coming to a geocache near you.

Geocache Description:

This cache is part of a nationwide geocaching series called ”Cache to Eagle” that showcases special contributions that Eagle Scouts have made to their community.

Reaching the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America requires years of dedication and hard work. In addition to 21 required merit badges, each Scout must complete a project that — on average — requires 167 service hours. In 2008 alone, that translated to $16 million in service (based on the national volunteer hour value of $19.51).

This multi-cache is hidden at Marshy Point Nature Center (MPNC). The first stage starts at the recycling trailer for aluminum cans built as an Eagle Project by one of the Boy Scouts in the Chesapeake District. This trailer will help reduce the aluminum trash in the park, and provide an opportunity for MPNC to raise some money by recycling the aluminum. When this cache was placed, the recycling trailer was at the posted coordinates. On occasion, the trailer will be on a recycling run, or may be moved to the parking lot of the Nature Center. Please include in your log if the trailer was at the above coordinates. To determine the final stage of the geocache, look for the two sets of 3 digits numbers on a label on the frame of the trailer. If you're standing at the front of the trailer, the numbers are to your left, just under the bed of the trailer. These are the last three digits of the N and W coordinates (Decimal Minutes) in that order. If these numbers are ABC DEF, the coordinates for the final are N 39° 20.ABC W 076° 22.DEF. If the trailer is ever out on a recycling run, the final coordinates are at the beginning of the log book for BAC, Chesapeake District, Cache to Eagle #6, which is in the same park.

This Baltimore County Park is usually open from 7:30AM until dusk seven days a week.

Since Marshy Point opened in 2000, there have been more than 20 Eagle Projects constructed in the park. They have a huge variety of programs available throughout the year so check out the Nature Center while you are there. It is open from 9 until 5 every day except for Baltimore County holidays.

Over its first 100 years, Scouting has provided millions of hours of service to communities across America. For our 100th Anniversary, we’re celebrating that legacy with special service opportunities through "A Year of Celebration, A Century of Making a Difference". You can join us, and even earn a commemorative patch! The Baltimore Area Council, Chesapeake District series of Cache to Eagle caches will number 12 eventually, and each one will have a card that contains one of the 12 points of the Scout Law. Keep track of each one and when you’ve visited all twelve, send me an email with this codeword and the particular associated number within the series (this is number 5), and the first 25 people will be eligible to receive a commemorative Cache to Eagle patch. Visit Scouting.org/100years to learn more.

About the cache itself:

The container itself is an ammo can hidden just off of the Weiskittel Trail (red blazes) at Marshy Point. You should start on the White Tail Trail (white blazes) at the Trailhead waypoint, which you can get to near the recycling trailer. Take it to the end (past the first turn for the red trail) and when you get to a T, make a right onto the red trail. When you are about 250 feet from the cache, you need to leave the trail. Incidentally, the old CAM 2005 - Marshy Point cache was just to the left of this point. The hike from the trailhead to the cache is about 0.5 miles. This trail gets VERY wet when there has been much recent rain and may not be passable during extreme high tides.

FTF gets an unactivated Geocaching Merit Badge geocoin.
