Official Texas Parks and Wildlife cache placed by park rangers and in preparation for the new Texas State Park Geocache Challenge in the spring.
At the geographic center of the World Birding Center network, Estero Llano Grande State Park in Weslaco attracts a spectacular array of South Texas wildlife with its varied landscape of shallow lake, woodlands and thorn forest. This is a wonderful 2/3 mile round trip hike to witness amazing wildlife on its trails
Ensure you check in at the visitor center and make sure you get a map to follow the trails. No bushwhacking possible or allowed on this one. The cache will take you through an amazing butterfly garden and the parks visitor center where staff can tell you what birds you will see. Be sure to stop at “the deck” and look through one of their spotting scopes for a view you will not forget. Then enjoy a wonderful trail past Ibis pond and follow the signs to Alligator Pond. A cool bridge takes you over a drainage ditch and be sure to look for wildlife tracks on the mud including raccoon, beaver, bobcat and alligator. The trail will take you past a group shelter, which is a great place for a picnic and the cache is very close. Once found site on one of the wildlife viewing benches and we hope you can contemplate how special Texas State Parks are.
