Geocache Description:

From the location of this cache, you can peer into one of the entrances to a network of underground tunnels which have become known as the Camden Catacombs. The cache is a 35mm film Cannister. Magnetic.

Underground Canal Basin

The underground canal basin here, under the bridge, leads into a complex of tunnels. They were built in the 19th century as stables for horses and pit ponies that were used to shunt railway wagons in the goods yard at the large Camden LMS goods rail depot that used to surround this area. The tunnels run under the Euston mainline, under the goods depot at Primrose Hill, beneath Gilbeys Bonded Warehouse on the Regents Canal and under Camden Lock market. Their route can be traced from the distinctive cast-iron grilles set at regular intervals into the road surface; originally the only source of light for the horses below.

Camden Catacombs

The spirit of the horse lives on in the market itself. Recent development and expansion of the market site was underground. A large new staircase has been built which descends to underground market stalls which were once part of this complex. The developers have placed many statues of horses all around.
