Welcome to Smedjebacken!
The municipalities of Sweden (kommun) are the local government entities of Sweden. The current 290 municipalities are organized into 21 counties (län). The municipal governments are responsible for large portion of local services like schools, emergency services and city planning.
Smedjebacken Municipality (Smedjebackens kommun) is a municipality in the very south in Dalarna County in central Sweden. Its seat is located in the town of Smedjebacken.
The present municipality was formed in two steps during the last nation-wide local government reform in Sweden. In 1967 the market town (köping) Smedjebacken was reunited with Norrbärke from which it had been detached in 1918. In 1974 Söderbärke-Malingsbo was added.
The term Dalarna County is mainly used for administrative purposes, being further subdivided into 15 municipalities (kommuner). Dalarna County virtually encompasses the historical province Dalarna (literally, "the valleys"), that deals with history and culture of the area.
