Geocache Description:

Stroll along the beach to this cache that forms part of the Shipwreck Series. For the series methodology and more info visit SS: Shipwreck Series via the related web page link.

Built in 1928 and owned by the Avenue Shipping Company. Commanded by Captain C.H. Mordaunt, she was en route from Port Lincoln in South Australia to Liverpool, England with a cargo of 6000 tons of wheat. She came to Cape Town to rebunker on 28 July 1934.

Shortly before 21h00 the captain confused the radio tower lights erected at Milnerton with the breakwater light and ran his vessel hard aground despite best efforts of the Port Captain's office to warn him of his error. The entire crew got to shore safely.

Part of her cargo was removed before the constant battering of the sea broke her back. The remaining cargo eventually spontaneously combusted and burnt out the vessel.

The Milnerton lighthouse now exists to prevent such strandings.
