Geocache Description:

Easy find at the Alex Brereton Legion, in Elnora. You are looking for a cache with a magnetic personality. The original contents are a log, small pencil, and a trackable red poppy micro geocoin (with a mission). FTF gets their name first on the log.

Alexander Picton Brereton (13 November 1892 – 10 January 1976) was a Canadian recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. He was the son of a Manitoba farmer. Alexander was 25 years old, and an acting corporal in the 8th (Winnipeg Rifles) Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the VC(Victoria Cross)
On 9 August 1918 east of Amiens, France, during an attack when a line of hostile machine-guns opened fire suddenly on his platoon which was in an exposed position with no cover Corporal Brereton realized that unless something was done, his platoon would be annihilated. On his own initiative he at once sprang forward alone and, reaching one of the enemy machine-gun posts, shot the operator of the gun and bayoneted the next one who attempted to operate it, whereupon nine others surrendered. His action inspired the platoon to charge and capture the five remaining posts. He later achieved the rank of Company Quartermaster Sergeant. He is buried at the Elnora Cemetery.

The Alex Brereton Legion is one of only three legions in Alberta named after an Victoria Cross winner. There were only 70 Victoria Crosses awarded in all of WW1 There are now no WW1 veterans alive in the Elnora area, and only one WW2 veteran left in Elnora and area. Alex's Victoria Cross resides now in a war memorial museum in London, England.

Every year the local school kids and community members pause to remember our brave men and women who have served their country, at the annual Elnora School Remembrance Service.
