There is an abundance of caches in the Tamar Valley, but so far not one in this town, so we’ve created a short multi.
Tatana is an old name for the town of Exeter, a bustling community situated in the Tamar Valley 25 km North of Launceston. In the mid 19th century there was much activity in the general area but the site which is now Exeter was uninhabited. The township was originally planned to be situated closer to the Tamar River between the Supply River and Blackwall. However the place where the roads from the west converged with the main road between Launceston and Beaconsfield was deemed to be a more logical site for the township, which was first known as "The Crossroads" or "The Corners", later becoming Tatana. The Post Office in the town operated under the name of Tatana until 1968, when it was changed to Exeter.
Mr. William Southerwood is generally regarded as the town’s founder. He ran a coaching service between Launceston and Beaconsfield, and Exeter was the halfway point for changing the horses. He bought 100 acres of land around the stables and in 1904 he built a single storey inn - The Exeter Hotel. A second storey was added in 1912. Orcharding was booming and William Southerwood planted 45 acres of fruit trees - the largest orchard in the area.
One of the earliest houses was "The Springs" which was built by a Mr. Weston, a Launceston solicitor. He planted 22 acres of orchard at the northern end of Exeter (opposite the information centre) and another 16 acres at the southern end.
The largest house was "Tresca" (the name derived from a random selection of letters) which was built in 1914 by Mrs. Reed and her son Eric and in 1930 a private 9-hole golf course was opened on the property. Part of the property is now the School Farm and the local golf club still operates the golf course. The magnificent house is now a community centre, hosting an on-line centre and other community organisations.

We would wager that at least 50% of cachers will succumb to the temptations here before moving on. The two-word name of the establishment is the key to the next waypoint.
A is the number of times the letter ‘A’ appears in the name, B is the number of times the letter ‘B’ appears in the name, etc.
