Sir John Alexander Macdonald (Liberal-Conservative Party of
Canada) was Canada’s first Prime Minister and held the office
for two terms, serving from July 1, 1867, to November 5, 1873, and
again from October 17, 1878, to June 6, 1891. Key accomplishments
of his political career include being a Father of Confederation and
seeing the provinces of Manitoba, British Columbia and Prince
Edward Island join Confederation. He was an important figure in the
creation of the Canadian Pacific Railway from 1871 to 1885 and in
the creation of the Northwest Mounted Police in 1873. He was also
behind the development of Canada’s first national park in
Banff, Alberta, in 1885. He served as Canada’s Minister of
Justice and Attorney General from 1867 to 1873 and was Leader of
the Opposition from 1873 to 1878. John Macdonald was a lawyer by
profession and first sat as a Member of Parliament in 1867. He was
born on January 11, 1815, in Glasgow (Scotland), and died on June
6, 1891, in Ottawa, Ontario.

Sir John Alexander Macdonald (Parti libéral-conservateur du
Canada) a eu deux mandats à titre de Premier ministre du Canada, le
premier du 1er juillet 1867 au 5 novembre 1873 et le second du 17
octobre 1878 au 6 juin 1891. Au titre de ses grandes réalisations,
il a été Père de la Confédération, où il a vu entrer les provinces
du Manitoba, de la Colombie-Britannique et de
l’Île-du-Prince-Édouard. Il a été un personnage important
dans la construction du Chemin de fer du Canadien Pacifique et dans
la création de la Police montée du Nord-Ouest en 1873. On lui doit
en outre le premier parc national créé à Banff en 1885. Il a été
ministre de la Justice et procureur général du Canada de 1867 à
1873 et chef de l’opposition de 1873 à 1878. Avocat de
profession, M. John Macdonald a été élu pour la première fois
député au Parlement en 1867. Il est né le 11 janvier 1815 à
Glasgow, en Écosse, et il est décédé le 6 juin 1891 à
Ottawa.
