A Hartwick Pines State Park Ski/Bike Trail Cache.
This cache is one of 9 placed along the HPSP ski trails for snow enthusiasts to enjoy during the usually slow winter caching season. NOTE: A State Park Permit is required to park your vehicle here.
This series of caches is rated as CHALLENGING and NOT RECOMMENDED for novice skiers or those with limited winter outdoor skills, as there are several considerable hills and portions of the trails are in fairly remote areas far from any assistance should it be needed. It is also always a good idea to travel with a buddy when attempting these caches in the winter. If you choose to showshoe, Please be considerate and stay off the xc ski trackset!
There are 3 caches spaced around each of the 3 looped trails so they can be hunted in small sets or as a whole depending on one’s abilities, time and wishes. To seek all 9 would involve some backtracking on the trails and require almost 8.5 miles of skiing/snowshoeing/trekking. We do plan to leave these out year around, so one could wait for the warmer months and ride their mt.bike or walk on these somewhat sandy trails as well.
The 3 trails are all loops with the Aspen Trail being listed as 3 miles/4.9k long. Adding the Deer Run Trail is listed as 5 miles/8k long and adding the Weary Legs Trail would total 7.5 miles/12k. Backtracking adds the remaining distance. The trails can be done individually depending on which way you travel and the distances would depend on your starting point. Not all of the roads in the park are plowed however, so your choices will be limited during the winter months. Of course you could just bushwhack and ignore the trails altogether. Check out a MAP of the trails from the park’s web site.
The hides themselves while winter friendly (which is a big hint) are not all placed right next to the trails and might require you to make your own trail a relatively short distance through the sometime knee deep snow. Of course once found in the winter, it is MUCH easier to follow the geo-trail straight to THE site.
Now that you have been appropriately warned, Have fun and BE CAREFUL out there!
MAJOR bragging rights and admiration from the Geocaching community for those who complete this series in one trip!
