Quick, Magnetic while you explore the magnificent Ruins
The Cement Works were established on Limestone Island ( Motumatakohe ) in Whangarei Harbour in 1885. In 1916 they moved to Portland, on the shores of the Harbour. The Expansion of the Cement Works was one reason for Whangarei's growth in the 20th century. Now this Island reserve is a secure breeding ground for some rare and endangered native birds such as the New Zealand Dotterel.
Motu Matakohe, also known as Limestone is a 37 ha (100 acres) Island just off the suburb of Onerahi in the upper reaches of the Whangarei Harbour. Explore the two brick kilns which were used early in the making of cement on the Island in the mid 1800's. A batch process, lime rock was placed in the centre and a wood fire stoked underneath. Also explore the concrete pillars in the cement mill ruins which would have reached to the roof, as well as supporting other machinery. Find the brick structure of the single man's quarters. The Molley Stevens Track provides wonderful vistas over the cement mill ruins and down the harbour. The Takahiwai hills provide the backdrop view. Plenty of interesting history awaits you. You will need some sort of boat/ kayak. Cache is to small for writer, so please bring your own. Co'ds maybe out alittle as hard to get good reading, so use clues. A better reading would be great if this is out alot thanks. Now go and enjoy. Would enjoy looking at the odd photo too.
