Leopard tanks arrived in Australia in 1976, replacing the British Centurions which had served since the1950s.
In March 2004, the decision was made to replace the Leopard 1 with the US Abrams.The first Abrams arrived in September 2006.The Leopard was operated by the 1st Armoured Regiment and was withdrawn from service in 2007. Their guns were never fired in anger.
Congratulations to the RSL for securing a great peice of military history for their branch and Port Augusta.
