Geocache Description:

Spotty dog

Spotty dog was an iconic Cape Town landmark as far as I was concerned and I recall being extremely excited to "spot" him first as we arrived in the Cape on our annual Christmas holiday from the then Rhodesia. Please use extreme stealth to extract and replace the cache!

Spotty was originally built in the 1930's and was used for many purposes. He would be remembered by old folk when he was a popular roadside roadhouse and resturant. I recall him being used by a vendor of fruit and vegetables in the 60's as well. He was quite a famous landmark with many tourists stopping to take photographs even if they did not partake of the fare on offer.

In the 70's he unfortunately suffered severe damage by a truck and had to be demolished.

The original dog was replaced but in 1988, this smaller version of the famous Spotty Dog was moved because of building work on the site.
Later the same year, a new, 2m high Spotty Dog was back on the site with Baby Spotty at its side. Baby Spotty was later removed due to repeated vandalism and now guards the front door of the land owner’s offices a few kilometers away.

A link for an interesting diary of the construction of the new spotty can be found here

The following article appeared in the Constantiaberg Bulleltin in July 1988 and is of some interest.

This is how Spotty appears today!
