Geocache Description:


This is a night-time only cache and is based on a true story! You will need a high powered flashlight or LED headlamp in order to locate the cache.

Posted co-ordinates are for the trailhead. To find the cache, refer to Finding the Cache below.




Arachnocampa is a genus of fungus gnats (flies). In their larval stage they are known as glow worms. They are found mostly in New Zealand and Australia in caves and grottos, or sheltered places in forests. The larva spins a nest out of silk on the ceiling of the cave and then hangs down as many as 70 threads of silk (called snares) from around the nest, each up to 30 or 40 cm long which hold droplets of mucus.

The larva glows to attract prey into its threads. With hundreds of these glow worms up above, flying insects may think they are flying up into the night sky when in fact they are flying into their own demise. Once they are trapped in these sticky lines, the glow worm hauls them up and feeds on them!


Finding the Cache

To find this cache, proceed to the posted co-ordinates and from there take the well defined trail to stage 1. At stage 1, you will need to shine your flashlight in a 360° arc to reveal six hanging glow worms (there are 3 on either side of the path - each set is pretty much in a straight line). Each glow worm contains a letter and a number - DO NOT take the letter and code with you! In the bogus co-ordinates below, substitute the letter with its corresponding number to determine the co-ordinates for the final of this cache.
