Dewey No Longer Spoken Here : Carnegie Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

Trail Reader: As much as I hate to do so, I'm going to archive this multi. The construction happening at GZ is extensive and doesn't look as if it will be completed anytime soon. Seeing a gap in the fencing, I slipped in and was able to grab the container (to be reused elsewhere!), but the cache is no more. Thanks to all who visited!

Geocache Description:

The cache is not located at the above coordinates. What you will find here are two bronze plaques affixed to this non-library structure. One plaque reads, as follows,

"On this site stood the first Salinas Library. Funds were raised through the efforts of the citizens of Salinas and a pledge from Andrew Carnegie. Designed by Jacob Lenzen, the library opened Nov. 5, 1909 [and was] demolished in 1960 ..."

As a youth, John Steinbeck browsed its shelves and the library even found its way onto the pages of his The Pastures of Heaven. The stately Carnegie building must have been a fine addition to the other structures along Main Street.

Please read the second plaque and answer the following questions in order to solve for the following coordinates:

N 36 40. ABC // Checksum 27
W 121 39.DEC // Checksum 32

A = Which line includes the word toleration?

B = How many words are found in line 4?

C = What is the second digit in the year mentioned in line 6?

D = What is the number of words in line 2 minus (-) the number of words in line 3?

E = How many words are found in line 5?

The cache is a small magnetic metal tin located just a few feet from the sidewalk, within walking distance of the Carnegie site. Please bring your own pen to sign the log.
