Geocache Description:

You are looking for a tupperware tub style cache, hidden in a not too taxing manner. :) Concealed inside a homemade camouflage bag.

The co-ordinates have been set using an iPhone4 (and double checked in Google Earth).

There is parking in the lea of the railway bridge in the lay-by.

The flitchway is an old decommissioned railway line that has been converted for walkers and cyclists to enjoy.

The flitchway is incomplete though, some of it was converted into the Dunmow bypass. The Braintree end meets up with the Braintree/Witham branchline. The Bishop's Stortford end just peters out... here!

The route begins at Braintree, the junction of Roman roads from Chelmsford and Colchester, which became a thriving industrial centre by the 19th century, partly thanks to the coming of the railway.

The route name comes from the Flitch Trial, a folk custom still surviving today which originated in Little Dunmow. Every four years a married couple stands before a mock court - if they can prove to the satisfaction of the judge and jury that they have, for a year and a day, ‘not wished themselves unwed, they are awarded half a pig known as a ‘flitch' (side) of bacon.
