Opened in 1932 by Akana Wong and his son, Richard, the Kalapawai Market is a local Kailua landmark. Akana Wong had his original store, the Akana Store, near the entrance to Maunawaili. The primary business was processing taro and supplying poi to the Kailua community. The family sold the poi factory and opened the Kalapawai Market in 1932. Now owned by another father and son team, the store remains a local landmark, now known throughout the world due to the tourist industry. The area where the cache is hidden has recently been spruced up and looks great. Enjoy the hunt, a treat from the store and rest a while.
