Geocache Description:

It is back in about 1977 (approx). An extended family get together is occurring. 4 kids wonder off and while playing they hear a loud bang, then another, then another and so on. The kids start discussing whether it is gun fire, but decide on christmas crackers and start to head back. Soon they run into a frantic uncle, telling them to run for their lives. They are hesitant to follow.

One looks back, where the family is having their picnic and reality sets in. They run. It is the days before mobile phones. They eventually make it too a house about 3kms away. And report what was happening.

Living on the edge of this forest, I had always thought this story was folklore, but a few years ago the it was in the newspapers as one of Australia's worst massacres. At the time it was kept hushed because they didn't want to create panic. I always found this hard to believe and I dont always believe what I read in the papers, But the events have been confirmed from a number of sources. While the exact details are sketchy, I believe when the Police arrived they found 13 bodies, including the gunman. Some survived the injuries, while others like the kids ran and survived, some coming out of the forest days later.

Now it is a peaceful picnic ground. The original picnic ground has now been reclaimed by mother earth. It can still be found another 300m up Herman track from the bridge. It is marked by a sign saying Herman track, that was once opposite a track that went to this little dam. It is almost completely overgrown. There is no sign of the eagles nest that used to be in one of the massive Grey Gums here.

Their used to be a cache called Eagle Nest under the bridge.. The track is named after Peter Spud Herman who worked with Conservation Forests and Lands for many years. When the tracks where originally named, they where usually named after a worker in the area.

Enjoy the serenity of this now peaceful area.

I recommend that this cache be undertaken as a half day walk that includes about 6 other caches in the area.

This cache is about 160m from the carpark.

However, gates are located about 600m up the road for visitors who arrive outside the hours of 8am and 5pm (extended in summer).
