The Penny Ferry
The Penny Ferry was a rowing boat service that for over 100 years was the quickest way to get from one side of the entrance to the old Cape Town harbour to the other. The entrance to the harbour is known as "The Cut" and it separates Fish Quay from the Pierhead. The four minute ferry ride used to cost a penny a head for the crossing and was mainly used by harbour workers and sailors. The only alternative was a 2km walk round the back of the harbour, so the Penny Ferry was a vital service in its day!
The longest-serving ferryman was David 'Abdol' Wasserfall who, during his ?? years of service, is estimated to have rowed the same distance as from Cape Town to Southampton! I wonder just what he would have made of the throngs of tourists that now need to cross every day on their way to and from the Robben Island ferry, which ties up at a jetty just across The Cut (and costs quite a bit more than a penny!)?
Today the Penny Ferry has been replaced by a modern bridge which spans The Cut and which is capable of swinging aside to allow the passage of larger vessels into and out of the still working harbour. The original Penny Ferry rowing boat is housed in the Iziko Maritime Museum at the entrance to the Waterfront.
The original puzzle took one to a a sign showing the distance to many of the places of the world from which visitors to the Waterfront now stream. Sadly this sign had been removed and the puzzle had to be changed.
You should now be standing by a information board and the old launch of the Penny Ferry. You will need to read the sign to find the following answers that should give you the coordinates to the final.
The historical route has 30 info boards this is nr AB ?
David Abdol Wasserfall rowed the ferry for CD years ?
Mogamat Peterson was the last ferryman till the late 1EF0 ?
The final cache position is located at
South 33 54.(D)(C+D)(C+D) Last 018 25.(D)(C-A)(F-A)
Getting to this position (which would be only minutes away by row-boat) may require careful timing and "taking photos" could be good cover. On the way you may spot the new residents of one of the Penny Ferry's landings.
PLEASE USE EXTREME STEALTH WHEN RETREIVING AND REPLACING THE CACHE.
Find the three pots, what your looking for is in the one closest to the pole. This is already a new hide location so please do not compromize it. Sadly the original container have been stolen and the last replacement coords have now become a no access point, so hopefully this one will last longer.
Please replace exactly as found.
If you are here on holiday, welcome to Cape Town and enjoy your stay!
