Apotek ingick i vad som kallades Apotekarstaten och började anläggas i Sverige i slutet av 1500-talet. Det äldsta apoteket är "Lejonet" i Stockholm som har anor från 1575. Till en början drevs apotek genom det så kallade privilegiesystemet, vilket innebar att man var tvungen att ha Kunglig Majestäts tillstånd för att få driva ett apotek. För att få bli innehavare av ett apotek ansökte man hos Kunglig Majestät och det stod fritt för vem som helst att ansöka.
