Built by Rama I in 1782 the three story structure was to alert the city to time, fire and invasion.
First floor housed the Yam Phra Surasri to signal Dawn and Dusk. The second Drum was called Akki Phinat and it was the Fire alarm. The third drum sounded warning for when invaders were attacking the city.
King Rama III had the roof changed to one of more Chinese style. Later it was changed back to the Mondop style of Thailand under RamaIV. Rama V had it removed to build Chao Chet Park.
The tower was rebuilt as part of the 200th anniversary of Bangkok.
