Geocache Description:

View Details for Tour Rattanakosin Island (Very old part of Bangkok)

Pier for Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn)

A lovely park on the bank of the river. Closes at 9pm

The area use to be the home for high ranking Royal Family Palaces and temples due to being so close to The Grand Palace. The word Tha Tian are assumed to originate from different beliefs. Some assume that the name Tha Tian derived from Hatian, the name of a city from which the Vietnamese who migrated to the area came from. Others believe that them name which literally means "Flattened Pier" was called cause there was a big fire in the reign of Monkut King Rama IV that devastated the houses in the area to a flattened place. Later this quarter had been used for the construction of Foreign Court and Royal Residences for foreigners in the early Rattanakosin period.

Tha Tian was famous because it was the Major Pier. It used to be the gathering ground of all the foreign diplomats to meet before being processed into the grand palace. Nowadays, Tha Tian is the wholesale marketplace of all the dried and preserved seafood.
