Blue Dome Traditional Cache

New info. In Oct/2011, a private concern announced a sniper
training school that was to take place in Skull Canyon (just east
of this cache)due to it's similarity to the mountains of
Afghanistan. BLM has contested the effort, however. Adds a bit of
adventure to 'finding' the Skull Canyon cache (GCAD09). We'll see
what developes.
Blue Dome is a “community or populated place” located
in Clark County, ID and appears on some Topo maps. In fact, the
USGS 7.5’ quadrangle, Blue Dome (field checked in 1969),
shows the structure (café) that we knew as “Blue Dome”.
The café burned down December 6, 1978. The owner, John Melvin,
sleeping in an adjoining bedroom, perished in the fire. Many
locals, and quite a few ‘passers-by’ (it was a popular
stop for travelers between Idaho Falls and Salmon), had their own
coffee cup hanging on the wall when they stopped in to ‘have
a cup’ and to visit. Friends and I used to stop here for a
‘burger’ or cup of coffee on some of our trips to hunt
in the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness. I miss the stop and thought a
‘cache’ would be a good way to remember and let others
know that there is a place called ‘Blue Dome’. If you
remember the café or have other knowledge of Blue Dome’s
history, (the name?) mention it when you log your
‘find’ and I’ll update the cache description as I
learn more.
