Geocache Description:

Meramec Highlands Quarry at Dee Koestering Park - MHQaDKP -

The Dee Koestering Park in Kirkwood is a natural park with walking trails and it is the location of the old Meramec Highlands Quarry, Watson Cave, and the old Meramec Highlands Resort.

The old resort was nearby and opened in 1895. It had a beautiful view of the Meramec River and valley. Rock from the quarry was used in the building of the resort. The quarry operated from 1891 to 1903 and burned down a decade or two later. The quarry was state of the art in its time and included wire line saws that looked like giant band saws. This land was being considered for multi-family housing when it was acquired by Kirkwood in 2002 and turned into a park. There still are many large boulders in the park that are left over from the quarry. The quarry is said to have provided a very limited amount of stone for the 1904 World’s Fair.

Below and to the west of the Quarry is Watson Cave. This cave is gated closed, but access is permitted to qualified persons who contact the Kirkwood Parks Department. The cave was originally mapped in the 1960s and it runs westward from the opening until about highway 270 when it turns to the north. The cave for the most part is small, short, and it contains a stream and a short waterfall.

If you hike about a half mile west from the parking lot at the park entrance you will reach an overlook and a display with more information about the quarry and the park. This hike is paved and hilly. Down in the low sections of the park there are unpaved trails that will take you to the stream, boulders, cave entrance and other caches.

I encourage you to hike into the park and visit during the winter when there is less foliage and the boulders are more visible at a distance. In the summer there can be poison ivy in the park.
