Planting a garden has always seemed to me to be a wonderful act of hopefulness and courage.
At the start of World War I my Great Grandmother was asked by her husband as he headed off to join up why she had planted such a large garden that year. She replied that if they hadn't been run off by harvest time, they'd have more to share with others and that if they were, for whatever reason, no longer there that those who came after were bound to be hungry.
If you haven't been to the Mare Island Preserve yet, what are you waiting for?
Wonderful views of the Bay Area await you - ones that give you a completely different vantage point than anywhere else. And it's an easy hike too.
Open weekends 9-5 with guided walks to areas that are closed off most of the time. For days and times, look at their website.
