Montgacon La butte féodale de Montgacon
 


        La butte de Montgacon fait partie des nombreuses mottes de la région qui formaient une ligne de fortifications le long de l’Allier, mais elle est certainement une des plus importante du département. Montgacon était autrefois une puissante baronnie qui constituait une sorte de petite principauté frontière de l'Auvergne. Le château était à deux enceintes, coiffant la butte assise, comme une verrue, sur le faîte d'un éperon projeté sur la plaine, à deux kilomètres de la rive gauche de l'Allier.Son aspect actuel est le résultat d’un remaniement du sommet après les bouleversements dus aux démolitions du château fort durant les siècles passés.
            En 582, sous la domination seigneuriale des ducs d’Aquitaine, une colonie gasconne vint s’établir en ce lieu, d’où son nom actuel de Montgacon descendant de Mont Gascon.
            En 1953, sur l’initiative du curé de Luzillat et grâce à une souscription publique, la statue de Notre-Dame des Moissons est dressée sur l’emplacement du château de Montgacon. La statue haute de 4 mètres a été réalisée par Raoul Mabru, directeur de l’Ecole des Beaux Arts de Clermont-Ferrand, sculpteur, à qui l’on doit également le monument aux morts de Royat et la « bergère » de Clermont-Ferrand.

        Montgacon the mound is one of many mounds in the region that formed a line of fortifications along the Allier, but it is certainly one of the most important department. Montgacon was once a powerful barony which was a sort of small border principality of Auvergne. The castle was two speakers, capping the mound sat like a wart on the top of a spur projected onto the plain, two kilometers from the left bank of the Allier. His current appearance is the result of a reorganization of the summit after the turmoil caused by demolition of the castle during the centuries.
            In 582, under aristocratic domination of the dukes of Aquitaine, Gascony came to settle a colony in this place, hence its current name Montgacon descending Mount Gascon.
            In 1953, an initiative of the priest Luzillat and through public subscription, the statue of Our Lady of the Harvest is erected on the site of castle Montgacon. The 4-meter high statue was made by Raoul Mabru, director of the Ecole des Beaux Arts de Clermont-Ferrand, sculptor, to whom we owe also the memorial of Royat and "shepherd" of Clermont-Ferrand .
            Details: Every 1st Sunday of July: Pilgrimage to Our Lady of the harvest on the Butte de Montgacon.
