Versteinerte Bäume
Im Eingangsbereich des „Chinese Stone Museum of Wuhan“ stehen versteinerte Bäume aus der Jurazeit.
Entstehung der versteinerten Bäume:
Versteinertes Holz entsteht durch einen langwierigen Prozess. Bäume werden durch Vulkanausbrüche von Lavaschichten ohne Sauerstoffzufuhr überdeckt. Dabei werden alle Holzbestandteile herausgelöst, Mineralien aus der umliegenden Erde lagern sich ein. Während des Versteinerungsprozesses wird auch die Grundlage für die Färbung des versteinerten Holzes gelegt. Verkieseltes Holz hat ein breites Spektrum an Farben.
Folgende Elemente/Oxide sind recht verbreitet und geben dem an sich farblosen Quarz (Chalcedon) eine Färbung:
Kupfer: grün / blau
Kobalt: grün / blau
Chrom: grün / blau
Mangan: rosa
Kohlenstoff: schwarz
Eisenoxide: rot / braun / gelb
Manganoxide: schwarz
Anders als bei verkieselten Hölzern ist bei vererzten Hölzern das versteinernde Mineral farbgebend. Durch Beimengungen anderer Elemente wird die Färbung des Minerals gar nicht oder nur gering beeinflusst.
Wie die Versteinerung (Verkieselung, Vererzung...) genau abläuft ist strittig. Es gibt zwei konkurrierende Vorstellungen. Nach der einen Vorstellung werden überwiegend Hohlräume innerhalb der Zellen und deren Wänden mit anorganischem Material verfüllt. Bei der anderen Vorstellung wird davon ausgegangen, dass ein langsamer Molekülaustausch erfolgt, durch den organisches Material durch anorganisches ersetzt wird.
Versteinertes Holz hat eine Härte (Mohs-Härte) von 7, die gleiche wie Quarz!

Petrified Trees

Formation of the petrified trees:
Petrified wood is formed through a long process. Trees are covered by volcanic eruptions of lava without oxygen. This all wood components are dissolved out minerals from the surrounding soil stored on. During the Versteinerungsprozesses also the basis for the color of the petrified wood is laid. Silicified wood has a wide range of colors.
The following elements / oxides are quite common and give the colorless in itself quartz (chalcedony) staining:
Copper: green / blue
Cobalt: green / blue
Chromium: green / blue
Manganese: pink
Carbon: black
Iron oxides: red / brown / yellow
Manganese oxides: black
Unlike silicified wood is wood that impart color in mineralized petrifying mineral. By amounts of other elements, the color of the mineral is not or only slightly affected.
As the fossil (silicification, mineralization ...) runs exactly is at issue. There are two competing ideas. After an interview will be mainly filled cavities within the cells and their walls with inorganic material. The other idea is assumed that a slower molecular exchange takes place, is replaced by the organic material from inorganic.
Petrified wood has a hardness (Mohs hardness) of 7, the same as quartz!
