In de herfst van 1914 groeven de Duitse en Britse legers zich in, in een grote boog rond Ieper. De frontlijn liep dwars over het kanaal.
Deze bunker was een Duitse commandobunker die wellicht in 1915 is gebouwd. Hij ligt in een vrij steile helling van het uiteinde van de langgerekte berg aarde die bij de aanleg van het kanaal was vrijgekomen : de "Kanal Koffer" (Duits) of "Spoil Bank" (Brits). Die plek was relatief veilig voor artillerievuur.
Vergelijkbare bunkers liggen ingegraven onder de spoorweg Ieper - Komen (benaderend N 50° 48.730' ; .330' en .250' E 002° 56.480' ; .760' en .850'). Rechts van de bunker werd, wellicht later, een schuilplaats bijgebouwd. De verschillende ingangen werden beschermd met een betonnen muur voor de bunker.
De bunker werd in juni 1917 na de mijnenslag bij Mesen veroverd en verder gebruikt door de Britten.

Parkeer niet vlak bij de cache, dit is gevaarlijk ! Gebruik de parking eventjes verderop en wandel langs het fietspad tot bij de cache.

In the fall of 1914, German and British troops entrenched in a wide semi-circle around Ypres. The frontline was more or less perpendicular to the canal.
This bunker was a German staff bunker and was probably constructed in 1915. It is located in a quite steep slope at one end of a long heap of earth that was dumped during the construction of the canal, called the "Kanal Koffer" (German) or "Spoil Bank" (British). The location was relatively safe from artillerly shelling.
Similar bunkers can be seen under the railway Ypres - Comines (approx. N 50° 48.730' ; .330' and .250' E 002° 56.480' ; .760' and .850'). At the right side of the bunker is a shelter, probably of later date. The entrances to the bunker were protected by a concrete wall in front of the bunker.
In June 1917, after the battle of Messines ridge, the bunker was taken over and used by British troops.

Don't park your car near the cache, this is dangerous. Use the parking some 100 m away and follow the cycling track to near the cache location.
