This cache is placed right below the beautiful Mogollon Rim and is one of our favorite places to visit. The cache is located just off of the Military Sinkhole Trail (Trail #179). The trail can be accessed from above or below the Rim. Best access points are the 260 Trailhead below the Rim or the Military Sinkhole Overlook off the Rim Road. The cache is closer to the top than the bottom.
From the bottom it is a strenuous hike; be prepared. The cache is not far from the trail and is in a camouflaged container. It is a beautiful trail in the summer, spring and fall and not recommended for the winter as heavy snow accumulations are expected.
This cache was placed by my son and me, just before Christmas, 2010. It was a cold and blustery day with snow flurries coming down. We don't expect anyone will find this cache until spring. It won't be long until this place is completely blanketed with snow. There is a Geocache lapel pin for the FTF.
You might be wondering about the name, Killer Beetles. Use caution in the area. Be alert. This area has been attacked by killer beetles. The remains of the former residents are scattered everywhere. You will have to walk through a virtual graveyard of the deceased to reach the cache. Keep an eye open. I think they're gone but you never know......
