Geocache Description:

Short description:
This pioneer Catholic Cemetery is located near, Phillipsville, Rideau Lakes Township, Ontario, Canada.

I hope that you will enjoy visiting this hidden cemetery with an unusual name so that you may reflect on the lives of the pioneers buried here as well as the learning the significance of the Cemetery name.

This unusual cemetery name commemorates; “The Twenty Six Martyrs of Japan” and the beginning of Christianity in Japan.

On February 5, 1597 twenty-six Christians - six European Franciscan Missionaries, three Japanese Jesuits and 17 Japanese laymen including three young boys were executed by crucifixion at Nagasaki, Japan.

The Martyrs of Japan are commemorated by the Catholic Church on February the 6th of each year and also by the Anglican Church, the Episcopal Church, the Church of England and the Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Across the road on the hill stands the original Catholic Church (Now a private home) and it is also unusual in that the original architecture lacked the distinctive spire and cross of most Catholic Churches.

An ironic note of history is that the Atomic Bombing of the City of Nagasaki (August 9, 1945) was the last major act of World War two and within days Japan surrendered.

While here you are encouraged to meander to rear of the cemetery and enjoy the view. A pretty stream winds its way between the ridges on its way to the sea.

NOTE: There is no writing instrument in the cache.
