Het Vierlingenbos ligt tussen de spoorweg en de weg Ieper-Hollebeke-Komen. Door de arme zandige bodem wat het gebied niet interessant voor de landbouw en was het een afwisseling van bos, stukjes heide en natte bronzones.
Tijdens de oorlog van 1914-18 werd hier intensief gevochten (het heette toen "Battle Wood") en bleef er van het bos niets over. Na de oorlog kwam het in handen van een rijke Noord-Franse familie die het inrichtte als jachtdomein. In het centrale brongebied werden een 12-tal vijvers aangelegd.
In 1998 kon de provincie een deel van het gebied verwerven als een mooie en waardevolle uitbreiding van het domein de Palingbeek. Als gevolg van tijdrovend getouwtrek tussen de provincie en andere administraties kon een Franse ondernemer met roots in de streek het mooiste stuk van de Vierlingen met het jachthuis aankopen. Dit deel is dus niet toegankelijk.

The "Vierlingenbos" is squeezed between the railway and the road Ypres-Hollebeke-Comines. The soil is sandy, so it had little interest for agriculture and was mostly covered by wood, patches of heather and wet zones.
In the Great War of 1914-18 this was "Battle Wood" and little or nothing was left of the original forest. After the war a French family acquired Vierlingen Wood and turned into a hunting park. The central wet zone with springs was converted into a series of 12 ponds and little lakes.
In 1998 the province could buy most of Vierlingen Wood as a beautiful and valuable extension of the provincial domain "The Palingbeek". Quite some time was lost in discussions and arguments between the province and other administrations so a French businessman with local roots could buy the central part with the hunting lodge. This part is the most beautiful part but it is not accessible.
