West Homestead is really two related residential communities, the Village, a post WW II hilltop community, and the historic district. West Homestead's historic district is a series of hillside residential streets lined with intact worker houses, built a century ago. Each with great views of the river valley, these houses are perfect for restoration. One of them is the great Mesta Mansion, built by the famous nineteenth century hostess, Pearl Mesta; this magnificent building and its gardens, on the National Register of Historic Places, are in the process of meticulous restoration. Also part of the historic district is the Bulgarian Macedonian club, which maintains the culture and arts of the ethnic heritages of the area. Eighth Avenue is a tree-lined boulevard, with a Victorian "Main Street" of shops on the National Register of Historic Places, and next door to West Homestead are twelve churches, the largest group of ethnic churches on the National Register in the U.S.
