Geocache Description:

Barley Fields
Railway Gatekeepers Cottage

This house, located on the Barley Fields road was home to railway gatekeepers and their families. Their job was to close a set of large boom gates - stopping vehicular traffic, while trains passed through. The gatekeeper here would have had a busy job as many freight and passenger trains travelled the tracks day and night, and there were no electric lights or bells to warn road traffic. Nowadays only the Countrylink Xplorer passes by, a couple of times per day. The Barley Fields road was part of the New England Highway until the 1970's when it was changed to it's current location.

This house was occupied by Jack, the last gatekeeper, until he passed away in the 1990's. It was restored, painted, and then fenced off. A mural of a gatekeeper has been painted on one of the southern windows. Mind you there is no likeness to Jack.

The cache is a 300mL NATO decon container with a few swaps inside. Please don't enter the grounds of the house, or the rail tracks - both are fenced. The cache is located away from the tracks, near the obvious parking area.
