About the "Plaza de la Cultura y de las Etnias" monument:

The "Plaza de la Cultura y de las Etnias" is a monument to the many cultures that have left their footprint on Panama. To begin with, there were the Native Americans that crossed the whole of Panama both from the North and from the South. Many other cultures also left their mark on Panama during the discovery, colonization, and later, the construction of both the Panama Railroad and the Panama Canal.

To honor the forbearers of Panama’s current melting pot, the "Plaza de Cultura y de las Etnias" was created in 2003, the year of the Centennial of Panama. The construction began on the first months of the year and was unveiled on October 12th that same year, Day of the Race (Columbus Day). It is a testament to the immigrants from all corners of the globe that loved, worked, and contributed to the progress and growth of Panama.

Many different cultural communities of Panama donated the initial $340,000 to complete the first phase of the monuments – these included the Spanish, Chinese, West Indies, French, Jewish, Indian, Italian, and North American communities.

The second phase cost approximately $550,000. It utilized a “canaleras,” which is one of the typical houses of the area that will be used as a cultural museum for information on these various Panamanian ethnic groups; the museum will have a capacity for 150 people. In order not to show favoritism to any of the cultural groups represented, Panamanian architect Jesus Santamaria was chosen to design the monument.
