Geocache Description:

This cache is the first in a series we plan to place to commemorate the old iron bridge that once spanned Coal Creek in what is commonly known as "Ghost Hollow". As you will see when you reach the cache location, a new concrete bridge now sits in the same location as the original iron bridge. Both spans of the original iron bridge were preserved and are now located on the new trail that circles the town of Covington, IN.

This site was very busy in the pioneer days with a pair of mills being located just upstream. In 1824 John Course built the first mill in Van Buren Township located on the west bank of Coal Creek. Later, a larger mill was built across the creek just off what is now Ghost Hollow Road. This was known as Hind's Mill. Many old wagon trails fan out from the mill sites and their remnants can still be seen.

In recent times, Ghost Hollow has been a popular place for Halloween hay rides. Many ghost stories were told about each of the two bridges in the hollow.

We hope you enjoy your visit to this unique location in Fountain County, IN.
