Geocache Description:

Geodes' twenty-fourth cache should be a quick stop in an area of tall trees and tall hills.

The main reason for placing this cache, apart from the fact that it's a convenient spot for a quick stop in a rather picturesque and beautiful area, is to act as an enticement to get off the bitumen and check out some of the surrounding country, although the Sylvia Creek Road, while unsealed, is really wide and smooth and you could probably take your Ferrari on it without fearing for its undersides.

This particular area doesn't appear to have suffered any recent fire damage but, sadly, since the Black Saturday bushfires, the whole Black Range/Murrindindi area is pretty much devoid of caches and, for some time, I've wanted to place a few around here. Today, unfortunately, I didn't allow enough time and only managed to get three out - however, I do intend returning and placing a few more in the future.

Curious red coloured trees
Old and new growth on a roadside tree fern

The area has lots of big hills, big trees, big ferns and various other attractions, many able to be enjoyed from the comfort of your car. One unusual sight I encountered while on the road near GZ was on a short stretch where I noticed a number of bright red coloured trees! They were mostly dead, so I think it must have been some poisonous fungus, or dust but, even after some heavy Googling, I haven't been able to find a satisfactory explanation; if anyone knows what causes it, I'd be interested to read about it in your log.

The cache is placed near the start of the Tanglefoot Trail which offers a few options for walkers, depending on how far they want to travel (there's an Information Board nearby), including a walk of around 4km to pick up the Wirrawilla Rainforest Walking track (where I've placed another cache). Use of two cars (one at each end) is a common strategy on these tracks.

Anyway, this one shouldn't be too hard, even though conditions were really bad for getting accurate co-ordinates while I was there and it wouldn't surprise me if they were a bit out, so use the clue - it's pretty specific.
