Geocache Description:

Background:

This cache is located at the entrance to Belmont Regional Park from Belmont Road – a little known roadway that starts at a secluded turnoff from State Highway 58. The road itself proceeds all the way through the park, neatly dividing it into sections. If you continue onwards, you will eventually come out in Normandale, Lower Hutt.

There is an altitude difference of more than 200 metres between the ends of Belmont Road, parts of it are steep in places, with a gradient of up to 12%. The surface is a composition of gravel and hard-packed clay – with occasional grassy sections. The overall length of Belmont Road is roughly 9 kilometres – 5 of which is inside the park.

Belmont Regional Park consists of 3500 hectares of land, which is jointly managed by 3 city councils (Wellington, Porirua, and Hutt), the Greater Wellington Regional Council, and the Department of Conservation. The spectacular views and wide, vast & open expanses and tracts of land make it a favourite of runners, mountain bikers, walkers and hikers alike.

It boasts a historic dam, World War II ammunition bunkers, and many old and interesting roads, peaks up to 457 metres in height (Belmont Trig) & Boulder Hill has near panoramic views of Wellington and surrounding areas. There is over 123.8 kilometres of length spread out over 46 the tracks in Belmont Park, over half of that is single width walking track, and 8 kilometres is gravel road.

Cache Description:

Driving directly to the cache is prohibited, you may park at the end of the sealed surface, and bike or walk on upwards where the gravel begins – depending on what mode of transportation you choose and how fit you are, the journey to the cache can take anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes.

If you choose (and this is the much more enjoyable option) – stop at the parking bay on the left of Belmont Road not long after the turnoff from SH58, and bike up to the cache, the gradient isn’t too steep– and it is very fun to glide back down at extreme speeds to the parking – just watch out for cars and the occasional pine cone (I’ve had a few close calls with the latter).

The cache is a recycled Nutella jar with a log book only. There is enough room for small swaps and TBs. Please bring your own pen / pencil.

If you find the old cache, a small blue translucent pill container, please let me know. Thank you.
