A royal theater and cinema.
King Rama VII, built this theater in 1933 using his own funds over seventy years ago due to his love of the cinema. At the time it was the largest and most modern entertainment center in Asia. It underwent major renovation in 1992, evolving as a modern theater based on international standards. It is well equipped with the latest special effects and technologies such as laser and multivision systems serving to enhance the already dramatic stage shows and films.
The Theater specialises in performances of ‘Khon’ – traditional Thai dances of around two hours in duration which carry a storyline based on aspects of Thai history and ancient Thai myths and legends. Other Thai performing arts (cinema, etc.) are staged at the theatre throughout the year. Khon is staged annually during winter months and plays are staged all year round.
