Native American Indians once gathered shellfish from the St. Johns River more than 2,000 years ago on Hontoon Island. The discarded shells accumulated over the years and formed shell mounds here. There is a very large shell mound on the southern end of the island. The hiking trail to the mound is beautiful & filled with wise old oak tree's.
