Rozhen Cache
The biggest monastery in the mountain Pirin dates back from the medieval times though the very early years of the monastery are not well known.
The earliest written source testifying to the monastery's existence is a note on a chant book from 1551, today in the Great Lavra library on Mount Athos. During 16th century the Rozhen cloister has its revival: the south monastery wing and the main church had been built. Unfortunately, a fire seriously damages much of the monastery in 17th century, destroying its entire library. The reconstruction starts in 1715 and in 1732 the church is completely finished.
Today, the Rozhen monastery is very well-kept and good-looking. It’s a real pleasure walking around it. Last but not least, here are tree interesting facts about it:
1. 200m away is located the grave of the famous revolutionary Yane Sandanski.
2. The outstanding Bulgarian movie “Vreme razdelno” / “Division time” by Anton Dontchev was filmed there.
3. Rozhen Monastery is National Tourist Object No 4 from the 100 NTO in Bulgaria.
It is really worth visiting that place. Don’t miss it!
