Grand Entrance: ECC II of VII Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

OReviewer: As there's been no cache to find for a long time or has had no owner response for at least 30 days, I'm archiving it to keep it from showing up in search lists, and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements.

Please note that if geocaches are archived by a reviewer or Geocaching HQ for lack of maintenance, they are not eligible for unarchival.

Geocache Description:

"Grand Entrance: Easton Cemetery Cache, II of VII."

You are looking for a micro-sized cache near the original entrance of the Easton Cemetery. To find this cache, you MUST enter through the main gate (N 40º 41.697; W 075º 13.114 or Seventh and Jackson Streets, Easton, PA)

The superintendant of the Easton Cemetery has kindly granted permission to cache on this property. Please remember that this is first and foremost a cemetery. If a funeral service is in progress, please give them privacy. Return later to find the cache or wait until the service has concluded and the group has departed.

CEMETERY-CACHING RULES:
1) No caching in the vicinity of a funeral service.
2) Dogs are allowed, however they must be leashed, and the owner must clean-up after them.
3) Cemetery hours: dawn to dusk.
4) Caches have not been hidden on, under, or adjacent to gravestones.
5) Park your car to the side as much as is reasonable.

This cache is meant to be a bit challenging (because of its size and appearance, not terrain), so there are no clues given. If you need a clue, email me through my geocaching profile.

After you enter the main gate, bear to the right and travel to the T intersection. Park your car out of the way, then use the paved area to locate this cache. NO BUSHWHACKING REQUIRED. If you climb down a steep, wooded embankment, you are at the wrong location. Stay on the pavement. BYOP and tweezers.

This area, along the Bushkill Creek, is prone to flooding. If you look to the northeast, you will see a steel bridge, the original entrance, and the gate. After building a new bridge, the entrance suffered from even more flooding, and in the 1920's it was finally closed. It was moved to the present location at Seventh and Jackson Streets.

So, what is the small building that is built into the hill? Remember, the cemetery was built before the time of electricity, automobiles, and refrigeration. Occasionally, a local mortician would place a body in this building. Because of the natural properties of caverns, bodies were placed in this 20' X 20' underground room, since it remains cool, even during summer. The building was the morgue.

ABOUT THE HIDE: The building and the fence are historic structures. Please do NOT pull rocks from the walls or fence. No need to climb the steep bank.

NOTE: Due to snowy or icy conditions, the cemetery may be open to pedestrians, only.

CONGRATULATIONS TO TAILSPIN14 FOR THE FTF! The cache was found after a recent snow storm, which made caching rather treacherous. Great job tailspin! WTG!
