The Cachechism question for today is: "Is it OK to pray for success when we're hunting for elusive geocaches?"

Well, to answer this question we will look to the Catechism of the Catholic Church. The Catechism teaches us that:

"Prayer and Christian life are inseparable, for they concern the same love and the same renunciation, proceeding from love; the same filial and loving conformity with the Father's plan of love: ... "Whatever you ask the Father in my name, he [will] give it to you." (John 15:16)

One could surmise that the "Father's plan of love" includes the love of geocaching ... Indeed, Which one of you would hand his fellow geocacher a snake when he asks for a hint? Not even that Heretic Apollinarius of Laodicaea would suggest otherwise!

Now, you might say: "Good Catholic Boy, don't you Catholics pray to St. Anthony to find hidden things? Where in the Bible does it say that it's OK to do that?!?"

That's a valid question which has been around a long time. To answer this question requires a little history lesson. You see, the Church was already over 300 years old when all the leaders of the faith got together and decided which religious books should be included in the Bible ... And how did they decide which books were divinely inspired and which ones weren't? They weighed these writings against the body of Apostolic Tradition! Indeed, the Catechism teaches us:

"Sacred Tradition and Sacred Scripture, then, are bound closely together, and communicate one with the other. For both of them, flowing out from the same divine well-spring, come together in some fashion to form one thing, and move towards the same goal."

and again:

"In many ways, throughout history down to the present day, men have given expression to their quest for God in their religious beliefs and behavior: in their prayers, sacrifices, rituals, meditations, and so forth."

So, the answer is yes, it's OK to throw out a random

"Saint Anthony come around ... Some thing's lost and can't be found"

When you're in a pickle ... after all, two voices are louder than one ... but it's not at all necessary. One must proceed as ones conscience dictates. However, to get back to the original question: "Is it OK to pray for success when we're hunting for elusive geocaches?" The Catechism teaches us:

"Since, like all the faithful, lay Christians are entrusted by God with the apostolate by virtue of their Baptism and Confirmation, they have the right and duty, individually or grouped in associations, to work so that the divine message of salvation may be known and accepted by all men throughout the earth. ... Their activity in ecclesial communities is so necessary that, for the most part, the apostolate of the pastors cannot be fully effective without it."

Therefore, clearly, not only is it OK to pray for good caching success, it's absolutely imperative! Whether caching alone or in groups! Amen, I say to you ...

"Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you." ~Matthew 7:7

Brothers and sisters ... Cache on!
