Geocache Description:

This cache is located in the Norfolk village of Upwell and continues the series
“Poppies on Parade” which was created by Mr Nibbler.

Like every village, town and city in the UK, Upwell has sent its sons and daughters to serve at sea, on land and in the air. For those who failed to return, almost every settlement in the UK has a dedicated monument at which the fallen are remembered every year.

You will be taken to Upwell war memorial, which is situated at the side of the A1101 as you pass through the village. Upwell was formerly divided with Cambridgeshire but now sits firmly in Norfolk, straddling the Well Creek (also known as the Old River Nene).

Well Creek is one of only two navigable inland links between the River Nene and the River Great Ouse, and up until the mid-1950s was still used for the transportation of goods. The future of Well Creek was thrown into jeopardy during the closure and filling-in of the Wisbech Canal which was completed in 1970, but thanks to the creation of the Well Creek Trust that same year, the waterway still survives today.

Upwell and the surrounding area has been inhabited for more than a thousand years; records from 970 reveal an inland port here, then known as Welle. In 974 Welle was divided, creating Upwell and Outwell as they are known today.

Limited parking is available in the vicinity of the cache, and a bus service from Wisbech to Upwell operates Monday to Saturday.

The cache is NOT hidden on the memorial and the site is overlooked by residents and passers-by, so stealth is required at all times. Please treat the area with respect and keep a watchful eye on any children who might accompany you.

You are looking for a nano cache with a just a tiny logbook inside so please remember to bring your own pen/pencil and just add the date and your initials, making sure that the cache is carefully replaced as you found it.

(The site is wheelchair accessible, but help will be needed to retrieve the cache).

Finally, please spare a thought for those whose names are inscribed here:

When you go home tell them of us and say:
"For your tomorrow we gave our today"
.
