Geocache Description:

This cache will take you to one of my favourite, and well hidden places around Maldon - the remains of the Red White and Blue gold mine.

This area can be accessed on good dirt roads from a number of directions, personally - I've always got to it from the west bound tracks near the remains of the Gower school (sign posted on the Catlemaine<->Maldon road). It may get a bit slippery after wet weather, and very dusty in dry weather.

Red, White and Blue differs from other mines around here as it has it's wheel tower still in place, but as it's quite a way out in the bush, the structure is not visible until you are almost on top of it.
The earliest alluvial diggings date back to the 1850s with the most recent operations dating from 1958. The mine shaft was started in 1871 and reached a level of 52 metres. The lease was acquired in 1958 by Golden Age Gold P/L and the mine was reopened with a poppet head being brought from the Deborah United Mine in Bendigo to operate the mine - but it was pretty unsuccessful.

Caution - a few items to remember:
- That dam over there is full of the residue of an a seriously filthy industrial process. It is not safe to take a dip or "take the waters"! Best avoided.
- This area has a number of open, and sometimes hidden mine shafts. It's not a good idea to go walking off into the unmarked bush (except to get to this cache !)
- In the summer there are snakes around here.

The cache itself if a medium sized Sistema in a very obvious location. And was placed as a team effort between Iamapom and iamapom's geo-father-in-law one-eyed. The difficulty here is finding the mine - not the finding of the cache container. The cache is in a tree stump of course. I left one of my personal pathtags in there as a FTF prize.
Would be great to see photos of cachers at the mine site !
